Woof!

It’s time to meet the pups…those clowning, furry, stinky, snuffling beasties I call “family.”

Full Name: The Malai Lama (pronounced “Mah-lee”)

Malai came to me through a friend whose Black Lab had her first litter of pups, “accidentally” sired by a neighbor’s Weimaraner.  She turns eight years old on November 24, 2008.  She’s a Sagittarius through and through, with her sense of humor and fun-loving attitude.  She’s always ready for a romp in the woods, playing in the park, or going on long, long walks.

She has very short hair that’s so shiny, many people mistake her for an otter, especially when she’s in her favorite element:

Water.

She swims non-stop and seems tireless when a lake or a pond is nearby. Like most Labs, she’s obsessive about many things, like tennis balls…and did I mention swimming?

She’s Zen, she’s playful, she’s beautiful, and simply an awesome pup.  She’s also the perfect foil for her brother’s antics.

Full Name: Osbourne Black
Ozzie’s mama was a beautiful Black Lab named Mia, and he was born to a litter of six siblings on January 7, 2003, deep in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. His human companions can only guess at his father’s identity, but their best assumption is the 120 pound Malamute who lived several miles away.  The only other option would be a black bear.  Having known him now for all his life, my vote is on the bear.

He’s a Capricorn pup, with a very serious and businesslike demeanor.  However, he’s also the consummate clown.  Ozzie weighs in at nearly 100 pounds of pure, don’t-touch-me, stop-lookin’-at-me lovin’.  His favorite element is “bed,” which earned him the nickname Sonic the Bedhog.  He’s also the gentlest, sweetest, and kindest pup I’ve ever known, especially with kids and small dogs.

And he’s a handsome cuss, too.

He eats like a goat (which means anything and everything he can find), and his favorite pastime is rolling in anything that’s been dead for several days.  Despite being the runt of his litter, he’s outgrown his litter mates by 40-50 pounds.  Strong as all get-out, he demands all the attention whenever he can.

Which is all the time.

Full Name: Yaz

Yaz easily outsizes and outweighs both of the other pups.  She’s the most recent addition to our family.  A Great Dane/Weimaraner mix, Yaz is sweet, rambunctious, obnoxious when she wants something (which is usually anything the other dogs are playing with or eating), and has a natural curiosity that is wonderful to watch.  To see a 100 pound puppy “pounce” on something is hilarious!

She’s very clumsy, or perhaps it’s devil-may-care…either way, she’s got more evidence of her numerous mishaps with barbed wire fences, boulders, and other inanimate objects than I can easily count.

A Scorpio pup, she is certainly the leader of the pack and doesn’t have any problem reminding everyone of it.  She’s also very loving and sweet when she’s not wrasslin’ with Ozzie or tormenting Malai.

What do you give a 100 pound puppy?

Anything she wants.
