Not Gettin’ It

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

I just don’t get it.

Maybe it’s because I’m a guy.  I don’t consider that an insult.  If that’s the reason I’m confused, then I’m glad for it.

On several of the blogs from my blogroll, I’ve read posts that absolutely gush about shows like America’s Next Top Model or that one show with uber fey host Tim Gunn. What is it about fashion that creates such a frenzy in not only the media, but in the masses as well?

I just don’t get it.

To be fair, I’ll admit that I’m not a person someone would look at and think, Gosh that guy sure knows how to dress. Let’s say that when grunge fashion became all the rage, I had already been wearing the look for ten years. Yes, I can wear a tux or a suit and look presentable, but I prefer not to.

It hasn’t always been that way.

Back in the eighties, I thought I was God’s gift to clothing.  Cavaricci, Girbaud, Guess, Members Only… I wore them with flair and style.  It was “the look.”  One of the big Colorado news services at the time featured my look in a fashion layout called “How The West Was Worn.” It featured me in a mullet (please stop laughing), overlarge cargo jeans that tapered down to barely boot width at the ankles, and a snazzy jacket that featured fringe along the sleeves.  All worn with my favorite cowboy boots.  I wince when I think about it.

Even then I didn’t really get it.  I didn’t (and still don’t) understand what the big deal is. They’re just clothes, for pete’s sake.  Of course, I was in my late teens and early twenties in the eighties, so all those raging hormones made me think I was the bee’s knees.  The cat’s pajamas.  The shizznit.  All the while, I wondered what all the fuss was, but figured what the hey?  If someone wants to pay me that much money to show me wearing clothes, and wearing them well, I could humor them.  It was just a paycheck.

And I might make the same assumption about current fashion programs.  Except…the audience isn’t making any money by watching them.  So why the fuss?

If anyone would care to enlighten me on this topic, I’m happy to listen.  Because I don’t think that this

Huh?

Huh?

is fashion.  Just sayin’.
