Ozzie Butt

This past Sunday, we were rocked with another spring snowstorm. Which I loved, I might add. However, there must be a Murphy’s Law regarding emergencies that happen on weekends or during really bad weather. It never seems to fail that if one is going to have an emergency, like, say, a really bad toothache, it will happen at the most inopportune time.

That’s what happened here.

Sometime early Sunday morning, Ozzie began gnawing at his back end. I thought it might be part of his shedding, as he had been dropping tufts of fur everywhere for the previous several weeks. However, he seemed more stressed about this, for some reason. After several hours of watching him clean and gnaw at himself, I decided to check.

You would’ve thought I had punched a hidden button that caused him to leap into the air and run away.

After several attempts to see what the matter was, I finally noticed a, well, seepage coming from his rear end.

That can’t be good, I thought. And he seemed to be in a lot of pain. A LOT. So I called the vet, but the recording stated that they were moving their clinic and wouldn’t be open again until Tuesday. I called the emergency cell number listed on the answering machine, but there was no answer.

I hate to see animals in pain. Any animals, but especially one of mine. And so an hour passed, and Ozzie was getting more stressed out. Finally, I gave in and risked driving in the blizzard the 12 miles into town so that a 24-hour clinic could see him.

They were fantastic. They fixed the problem (a pretty nasty abcess), and gave him antibiotics for infection. Then they proceeded to clean out my bank account and max out my credit card for payment. We won’t be able to eat this month, but Ozzie’s feeling much better!

So, I guess those packs of Ramen that have lived in the cupboard for the past year will come in handy this month. Woot!

  1. Poor Ozz! Hope he feels better soon!

  2. Thank goodness they were able to clean the abscess. And I understand about the $$$ spent to keep our pets healthy. You just need to revert to Old Mother Hubbard mode for a little while.
